UNEP Champions of the Earth
Increasing awareness of the Earth's most pressing environmental issues and developing practical solutions is a key global challenge. Champions of the Earth was launched by the United Nations Environment Programme in 2004 to honour the outstanding achievements of prominent and inspirational individuals and organisations in protecting and improving the environment at the policy level. Their leadership and determination are influencing governments, business and communities across the globe. Recent Champions of the Earth laureates have included: Mikhail Gorbachev, King Jigme Singye Wangchuk of Bhutan, President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa, the Hon. Al Gore and HRH Prince Hassan Bin Talal of Jordan.
